It’s the best holiday sparkle for the value. For a regular fare purchase, ride the decked out holiday train on the ‘L’ line on selected dates and times in December now through 12/23. Day or night, you’ll see the train way before it pulls into the station as it’s lit up with lights and seasonal images, as well as the man in red riding open-air in his sleigh on one of the train beds. Step inside one of the cars and be greeted by elves handing out candy canes, twinkling lights, holiday decorations, and plain old good cheer. If you’ve tried it, do it this month…it will become a December favorite for years to come.

Chicago Cyclocross Cup

On Sunday, December 7th, Montrose Harbor #11 will be converted to challenging cycling courses complete with “mud, crud, and barriers” for the Illinois State Cyclocross Championships. Cyclocross is a form of bicycle racing consisting of many laps of a short course featuring various forms of riding conditions, such as pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles. Participate in the events by pre-registering or simply show up as a spectator from 8:30am – 7:00pm.

19th Annual Christkindlmarket

Now – December 24 in Daley Plaza, visit the free open-air European holiday market featuring traditional art, handmade gifts, German foods, choirs, carolers, and an opening ceremony. This Nuremberg, Germany-inspired event, fashioned after its Christkindlesmarkt dating back to 1545, is a downtown favorite for locals and tourists alike.

JUF’s Annual Big Event Fundraiser with Seth Meyers

On December 13, The Sheraton Chicago in Streeterville will be home to Late Night with YLD, Young Leadership Division of the Jewish United Fund. This year’s festivities will include a comedy performance from Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers, with beer and wine, followed by a new two-hour after party with open bar, late night food, DJ, and dancing.

Adler After Dark: Santa Saves Mars

On December 18, The Adler Planetarium hosts its monthly award-winning after-hours event for ages 21 and up. From 6-10pm, you can explore the museum with open access while listening to music and sipping a cocktail or nog. Perfect for date night or catching up with friends and family, the planetarium’s backdrop offers the best lake Michigan views in the city. This month’s event includes a free screening of the funny film “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians,” a Dirty Santa Photo Booth, and The World’s Largest Snowglobe in the Grainger Sky Theatre.
