Chicago Street Festival Summer Kickoff 2014

57th street art festival chicago - jean ward - chicago lake condosIf you haven’t noticed, summer has sprung in Chicago.  The weather, the lake, the opportunities, and the activities all make our city one of the best summer places to live in the country.  This weekend is the kick-off to the famous Chicago Summer Festivals, with an impressive 10+ Street festivals rocking our city over the next few days.    So lather on the sun-screen and head out to your favorite festival!

Chicago Women’s Funny Festival

makes its 3rd annual return June 5-8 at Stage 773 in Lakeview at 1225 W. Belmont Ave.  400+ female comedians will be performing on 4 separate stages with stand-up, improv, musical comedy, and burlesque, to name a few of the acts.

Progressive Chicago In-Water Boat Show 

NEW at 31st Street Harbor, today through Sunday.  Learn about boating and sailing in the water, attend DIY workshops on maintenance and repair, attend free paddleboarding, Hobie Kayak spin, and SUP Yoga classes.  Demonstrations include flyboarding and Scuba diving, among others.

Andersonville Mid-SommarfestAndersonville Midsommarfest Chicago

makes its 49th annual debut tonight and runs through Sunday evening, June 8.  The Swedish heritage celebration is known for its top-notch music, shopping, entertainment, ethnic food, cold drinks, and various kids’ activities.  Located on Clark, between Foster and Catalpa, you can shop hundreds of street vendors, as well as many storefront businesses that stay open during the 3-day event.  Multiple stages feature music such as cover band 16 Candles, Headbanger Ball, and New Invaders.  Catch Maypole and folk dancing or watch the ever-extravagant dance performances from the Windy City Cowboys. 

Lincoln Park Greek Fest

offers “Food, Fun and Opa” Friday through Sunday.  Need I say more? 

16th Annual Rib Fest

Hit North Center at Lincoln/Damen/Irving Park tonight through Sunday.  Sample 50,000 pounds of meat on the street or visit the acclaimed Kids Square with bounce houses, yoga, games, crafts and mini-golf.  This hugely popular event brings in approximately 50,000 in 3 days, so try the $99 VIP Pass this year, which grants you Ribfest tickets, apparel, and line-jumping to the front at the Beverage Stations.

57th Street Art Festival in Hyde Park

adjacent to The University of Chicago campus, takes place on June 7 & 8.  This free daytime festival, touted as “Chicago’s oldest juried art fair in the Midwest,”  allows you to browse, buy, meet, and greet, all while listening to Blues and Jazz from Buddy Guy’s Legends.   Over 200 painting, ceramic, jewelry, glass, photography, sculpture, printwork, and more  artists exhibit their wares. 

Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival

in Lakeview June 7-8.  Tribute bands, food, libations, and street vendors rule the weekend.

Printer’s Row Lit Festival

Meet over 200 authors and purchase from hundreds of book sellers  in the South Loop, June 7-8.  Highlights include the Second City players celebrating the 30th anniversary of John Hughes’s The Breakfast Club with an adapted live-lit reading at 11AM on Saturday and Mark Bazer’s Interview Show at 2pm on Sunday on Center Stage, featuring local author Amy Krouse Rosenthal, author Colson Whitehead, and Bill Hageman of the Chicago Tribune.
