End of Summer Outdoor Activities

StreetervilleThe number of warm summer days left in the year is dwindling, and if you’re like me, you want to get as much outdoor exposure as possible before the Chicago cold fronts start to roll in.  Here’s a guide to your Chicago 2013 end of summer al fresco activities, provided by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

Air and Water Show

The 53rd annual Chicago Air and Water Show, the largest show in the US of its kind, is scheduled for Saturday, August 17th, and Sunday, August 18th, from 10am-3pm.  Admission is free at North Avenue Beach, where you’ll get the best view of the show and also encounter the most crowds.  Whereas in previous years you could view the aircraft performances along as far north as Montrose and Foster, this year, your best bet is along the lake front from Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street Beach.  If crowds don’t float your boat, try booking a seat on one of Chicago Air and Water Show Cruises that sail from Navy Pier.

Millenium Park grantpark2

Bring a chair or blanket, food and drink, and invite family and friends to meet you there.  There’s still a lot of life left to be lived before the summer’s end.

Outdoor concerts play a huge role in Chicago’s nightlife.  The Jay Pritzker Pavillion serves a variety of musical tastes with its summer lineup of concerts.  The Grant Park Music Festival presents The Rite of Spring’s Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus at 6:30pm on Friday, August 16th and and 7:30 on Saturday, August 17th.  The 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival runs August 29th through September 1st and offers many free concerts showcasing local, national, and international jazz talent, both at Millenium Park and other locations around the city.

An extension to the Summer Millenium Park Film Series has been added with the free screening of “Star Wars:  Episode IV – A New Hope” on Wednesday, August 21st at 6:30 in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion.

Want to join in on the action instead of watching it?  Make sure to hit the free morning workouts on the Great Lawn hosted by various local fitness and wellness groups.  These 45-minute classes are offered at the top of every hour from 7-11am, every Saturday through September 7th, starting with Tai Chi, followed by Yoga, then Pilates, and ending the morning with Zumba.

Grant Park Dancing

Put your dancing shoes on and head to the larger than life dance floor in Spirit of the Music Garden for Chicago Summer Dance’s free music and dancing Thursdays – Sundays now through September 15th.  From Big Band Swing to Country Western and everything in-between, get your free one-hour dance lesson, then experience live music and dancing for another 2 hours under the setting sun.

Don’t let the warm weather and plethora of warm weather activities pass you by over the next few weeks.  Get out there and experience your city!
