Get Your Exercise on Outdoors in March in Chicago

Chicago Lake Condos - Jean Ward - Get Your Exercise on Outdoors in ChicagoYou feel the spring in your bones, despite the snow, ice, and deep-freeze temps. You’ve seen more outdoor runners/walkers/bikers in the last few weeks and its making you itch to get out there yourself. Plan your escape now from the indoor gym workout and the basement exercise routines. Here’s what you can do to promote your fitness outdoors in March:

The 10th Annual Chicago Urban Shopping Cart Race, CHIditarod, is a perfect way to ease into outdoor exercise this month. This weekend in Wicker Park and Ukranian Village on Saturday, March 7, dress for the weather and come watch CHIditarod this one-of-kind – “part charity food drive, part beauty pageant, part bar crawl, all costumed shopping cart race.” It’s similar to the Alaskan Iditarod with dog sleds, but this 100% volunteer driven race uses teams of five costumed people to pull decorated shopping carts filled with 65 lbs of food donations from pub to pub. Registration for teams is already closed this year, but check out the physical challengers this year starting at the corner of Wolcott and Hubbard at 12:30pm, and get your team signed up early for next year’s race that benefits the Greater Food Depository and the CHIditarod Foundation.

The St. Paddy’s Day 5K/8K walk and run in Lincoln Park on Saturday, March 14th is a perfect start to the outdoor running season. The race, which benefits the Greater Chicago Food Depository, gets rolling at 9:30am and its course follows the Chicago lakefront. Register today and get outside and start training.

Once the ice on the bike path starts melting, jump on your bike and hit the trail along the lakefront. Make sure to keep your body temperature stable by wearing enough layers of clothing and make sure to wear your helmet, both to retain body heat, as well as to stay safe, especially with the elements taking a large part in your ride.

If you’ve never participated in the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle, 2015 is the year for you to join in on the fun. Beginning and ending in Grant Park, run the almost 5-mile tour through downtown Chicago amid a sea of green shufflers before joining in on the festivities after the race. This 36th annual 8K is conducive for even the beginning runner, requiring only that you run a 15-minute mile or faster. The $50 registration fee for the event, taking place on Sunday, March 29, gets you a green shamrock race tee, a finisher’s medal that doubles as a bottle opener, a shamrock themed neck gaiter, and a drink ticket for one beer at the Post-Race Party.
