What to Do This February Weekend in Chicago

Chinese New Year Chicago - Lakefront Condos - Jean Ward

Even though it’s still cold, the sun is shining, prompting us to get outside. You know your cabin fever needs a prescription, but you don’t know where to go. Let me help you out, as this February weekend is filled with fun events that will take place no matter what Old Man Winter is doling out.

Polar Adventure Days
The Chicago Park District knows how to make the best use of Mother Nature on Northerly Island on Saturday, February 21, 2015. Walk in snowshoes, see wild animals, listen to folk music and storytellers, and make a craft, all while sipping a hot cocoa. This free 12 – 4 pm event is perfect for anyone wanting to utilize the sunshine on the lakefront and is popular with families. Limited parking is available for $3 cash only.

Walker Stalker Con
Navy Pier hosts this 2-day Zombie, horror and sci-fi convention in the Festival Hall Saturday, February 21-22, 2015. Tickets are available for this fan meet-up with varying levels of VIP status, and it is recommended that tickets get picked up Friday night before the event at will-call. Doors open at 10:30am each day and the panels, celebrities, vendors, and costume party runs all day though late afternoon both days.

Neighborhoods of the World – Africa
On Sunday February 22, 2015, enjoy native folk music, traditional dance, food, and crafts of Africa from 12 – 3 pm, as part of an 8-week program that samples customs from various ethnic Chicago neighborhoods. The Crystal Gardens at Navy Pier will be hosting this free event in partnership with Africa International House USA.

Chinese Lunar New Year Parade
The year of the Sheep is underway, so plan on celebrating the annual parade in Chinatown, featuring a marching band, traditional dragon, lion dances and decorative floats. This free event is packed, so get to South Wentworth Avenue early on Sunday, February 22, 2015 to make it for the 1 pm start time.

Chicago Volunteer Expo
If you’ve been thinking about volunteering but can’t get motivated to do the research on how to do it or to decide where to donate your time, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum has bridged a gap for you with this free event. On Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 10am – 4pm, learn about all the ways to give back to your community and connect with 75 not-for-profit organizations that need your help now.
